WAITTAPresident's reflections: Dawn of a new era for WAITTA

With WAITTA renamed, President Con Polkinghorne reflects on the dawn of a new era for the 34-year-old Alliance.

Our organisation is embarking on a new stage of purpose and growth.

WAITTA is now officially known as the West Australian Innovation, Technology and Talent Alliance, with constitutional changes now endorsed by the WA Government.

The Board and I are filled with pride and optimism for our state’s growing digital landscape.

The decision to evolve our identity and purpose was borne out of both reflection and a renewed strategic direction.

We understood that Western Australia’s ecosystem has become more dynamic, diverse, and, above all, rich in human capital, however entering and commencing a career in WA’s digital economy is still challenging.

WAITTA’s new chapter is not merely about rebranding, but about reaffirming our commitment to being the connection of innovation, technology, and, critically, talent in WA.

The addition of 'Talent' to our title signifies a shift.

The ongoing growth of WA digital economy’s success and competitiveness hinge not just on pioneering products or services, but on empowering the next generation of ICT professionals, entrepreneurs, and creative thinkers.

This change is driven by our recognition of the hundreds of emerging professionals and entrepreneurs entering our industry each year, fuelled by digital skilling initiatives, and a vibrant startup culture.

The WA market is no longer just a commodities player - it is fast becoming a proving ground for new business models, digital platforms, and technological leadership.

Whilst recognising the continuing emergence of talent, we also acknowledge that WA is facing a talent shortage over the next five years.

WAITTA, along with partners and potential new partners, know that our future is not just about upskilling people, it is connecting the right opportunities with the right people.

Collectively Industry, Government and Academia all have a role to play which needs to be supported by professional bodies, such as WAITTA.

Leading into the future

As President, I am inspired by our partners, sponsors and volunteers - people who understand that sustainability, inclusion, and continued upskilling are the foundations for a resilient tech sector.

Our mission remains to foster collaboration, celebrate achievement, and facilitate opportunities that retain and attract talent in Western Australia.

Our programs, the INCITE Awards, the Game Changer Awards, and putt4dough will flourish under our new strategic direction. The values and purposes of WAITTA and our programs are now perfectly aligned with empowering WA’s technology sector to lead in innovation, STEM, digital inclusion, and elevating talent.

The Alliance is committed to expanding mentorship programs, deepening industry partnerships, and ensuring our events reflect both the legacy of our pioneers and the aspirations of our newest supporters.

We will continue to work hand-in-hand with government, academia, and partners to showcase WA’s potential and deliver impact all the way up to the international stage.

In this new era, WAITTA’s identity is a commitment - that we will continue to promote and champion talent, celebrate digital excellence, entrepreneurship, and innovation. All through the lens of the technology profession.

The journey ahead looks brighter and more inclusive than ever.
