The University of Western Australia (UWA) is one of Australia's leading research-intensive universities and the premier research institution in Western Australia. Part of the Group of Eight universities, UWA has a well deserved reputation for excellence in both teaching and research, coupled with a commitment to delivering high quality outcomes in all areas of its operation.
Situated within the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, the Multimedia Centre (MMC) is a teaching and learning facility that looks at new and innovative ways of utilising educational technology in the learning process. Operating within the MMC, the Lectopia team is responsible for the development and implementation of the Lectopia technology.
Lectopia is an enterprise lecture capture, publication and management system designed for use within the university environment. The system automates the recording of audio and video from traditional face-to-face lectures for publication online, facilitating on-demand access for students after the live event has finished. Recordings are published in a variety of streaming media and downloadable formats, including podcasting, and the system is easy-to-use for both lecturing staff and students.
The system commenced development in 1998, and was first commercialised by UWA in 2002. Because of its high-levels of efficiency, scalability and flexibility, its integration capabilities, and the ease of access, administration and management for all system users, the technology has been adopted in fourteen universities nationally and is currently being launched internationally.
Lectopia has been, and continues to be, fundamental in creating and defining the 'lecture capture and delivery' space, and is recognised internationally as a world leader by the higher education community. |
